PIRELLI ANGEL ST — REPLACE DIABLO STRADA IN 2009

February 2, 2009

World premiere at the circuit in the Algarve (of Portugal) at the press conference presenting the 2009 World Superbike, for which Pirelli is the exclusive tire supplier until 2012.
Portimão (Portugal) 23 January 2009 – Pirelli presents a world preview at the circuit in the Algarve in Portugal the Angel ST, the motorcycle tyre with a changing tread pattern and footprint design on the ground: first the appearance of

an Angel, then the silhouette of a Demon, representing at the same time the double soul of the product – reliable and sporty. Angel ST is dedicated to riders who love to travel by motorcycle and thus favor reliability, safety and

durability. This double soul matches the alternate desires of the Sport Tourer, who at the right times, does not want to sacrifice the thrills of the curve and the emotion of acceleration.

Angel ST
, which will be launched to the market by spring, is the result of innovative technology solutions, compiled by Pirelli’s research and development centers. The goal is to meet motorcyclists’ demands with a product which merges the traditional sporty characteristics of Pirelli with the demands of security and reliability, as well as value for the money. The decision to adopt the tread to contain the icon of an angel, intended after 1,000 km of use to transform itself gradually into demon, stems from the desire to pay homage to the movie Angels & Demons (w/ Tom Hanks, out in May 2009), for which Pirelli was a partner as the supplier of tires of car used in several scenes.

Angel ST was presented on the Circuit de Algarve in Portugal at the occasion of the inaugural World Superbike

Championship conference for the 2009 season, a series for which has been the sole supplier of tires starting from 2004 until 2012. The choice of the Portuguese circuit for the debut of Angel ST is not accidental: the new Pirelli product, the world leader in the motorcycle sector, benefiting from the vast Sports experience of Pirelli, which traditionally transferred to street bikes and to all motorcyclists the innovations and technological solutions refined within the

racing environment. “Racetracks are our open-air laboratory,” explains Guglielmo Fiocchi, General Director of the Pirelli Motorcycle Tire Division. “The pilots are the best Superbike testers that could be desired, which each and every race offers us food for reflection and improvement. Even more so, this feedback is in addition to the continuous innovation generated by our laboratories in Italy and Germany, in which are born products such as Angel ST.”

From a technical point of view, largely due to a trend-setting tread design, compound mixtures and innovative structure, this new Pirelli motorcycle tyre ensures incredible stability, maximum grip on dry and wet and considerable product life. Angel ST fits with sport-touring motorcycles (such as Yamaha FJR1300Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa  andKawasaki GTR 1400) and is designed for the needs of daily two-wheel riders, who often transform on the weekend to adventurous travelers who enjoy taking the route on the highway while watching out for curvy roads which allow flashes of exciting riding – but always in complete safety.

Pirelli Moto Takes Over in Dakar 2009: 1st and 2nd Overall with Scorpion Rally

January 20, 2009

2009 Pirelli’s debut in the Dakar as a supplier to the official KTM factory teams was nothing short of dominating, with the new SCORPION RALLY tyre capturing the 1st and 2nd positions on the podium with riders Marc Coma and Cyril Despres. This off-road rally tyre was developed together with KTM in preparation for this year’s Dakar. Out of a field of 235 riders, seven riders chose to have support from Pirelli and out of these seven, three riders finished in the top 7 positions overall. KTM Repsol rider Marc Coma (SPA) and Red Bull KTM rider Cyril Despres (FRA) were fiercely competitive in this 31st edition of the Dakar, considered to be the most difficult rally race in the world, which this year moved 10,000 km away to South America.

Two years of development on the new SCORPION RALLY tyre, made specifically for rally application and born from the winning heritage of the Scorpion product family, has resulted in a product worthy of such a challenging race. This new tyre underwent testing and collaboration with the best rally riders and racing teams, and Dakar 2009 was chosen for its launch due to the event’s popular following and demanding terrain. The innovative and complementary structure helped guarantee outstanding performance and high resistance to fatigue and puncture. Furthermore, the compound and knobs layout is designed to provide great traction and grip for the difficult terrains that are encountered in even most demanding rallies such as Dakar.

Pirelli Tyre would like to thank Marc Coma, Cyril Despres the entire KTM team and its riders for managing the uncertainty of change, their excellent preparations prior to the race, and for believing that Pirelli could produce a winning rally tire. From the positive feedback received during the testing sessions, to the open communication throughout the Dakar, it was clear that KTM and Pirelli were a committed team. Pirelli and KTM look forward to all the excellent racing results the partnership will bring as well as the strong and positive benefits which two sport-focused companies will inevitably find.

RALLY won 7 of 14 stages, and gained a total of 1:52 hrs over the competition. These riders tackled 5,652 km of specials from Buenos Aires to Valparaíso and back again, during which they encountered a race environment unique to this new location, with notable places like Terra Del Fuego, the Andes Mountains and the Atacama Desert, said to be the world’s driest desert. Dakar 2009’s extreme diversity and newly charted territory was especially challenging for the teams, the riders and technicians to make the ideal setup (regarding tyres, compounds, mousse, tubes, etc.,) as the environment was completely foreign from previous African Dakar races.

Notwithstanding the excellent performance of the top two riders, Marc Coma’s teammate Jordi Viladoms (SPA), who is always a perfect example of fine team spirit and consistency, finished 7th out of 235 riders and even took home his own win in Stage 10. Pirelli rider Rodrigues Filho (BRA) of Team Honda Brazil rode near the front for the whole race behind the pack of large displacement bikes, putting his 450cc bike in the 12th spot for the Dakar overall, and 3rd amongst bikes in the 450cc class.
